Service dogs are indispensable companions for individuals who require them. They also act as therapy dogs and provide medical and emotional support. They can make wonderful companions that will be by your side whenever you need them. Such a wonderful service dog has been deemed a substantial award after he remained by his master’s student’s side throughout graduation.

Brittany Hawley, who lives in Wilson, North Carolina, has complex regional pain syndrome and takes the support of a wheelchair. She was the ideal companion for a service dog and hence acquired one through the Paws 4 Prisons program a few years ago. When she encountered Griffin, the dog, for the first time, she knew that he would be the perfect companion for her. She said that some dogs are afraid of wheelchairs but Griffin was not. He leaped onto her lap and licked her face with love.

Griffin entered her life just before she was going to begin her new journey at Clarkson University to earn her master’s degree in occupational therapy. The dog didn’t disappoint her and always proved his worth. Griffin kept accompanying Brittany to all of her courses and assisting her by opening doors and getting essentials. He also consoled her during times of anxiety and depression. Brittany told CBS News that she felt more independent, gregarious, and outgoing because of Griffin.

Brittany and Griffin continued to accompany each other at Clarkson, and Brittany was prepared to graduate in late 2018. She knew that she could not have completed her course without her service dog and realized that Griffin should be part of her celebration.
Brittany said that Griffin has also earned his own degree for his dedication to standing by her side. “I have fought since day one for Griffin to graduate alongside me”, added Brittany.
