Meet The Amazing Sheepshead Fish With Human Teeth

Jennette’s Pier shared a photo of Sheepshead fish with human teeth on Facebook. The picture was clicked in Nag’s Head, North Carolina, USA, and has caused quite a stir around the internet and surprised many. 

Sheepshead Fish are found in coastal waters along the western Atlantic, from Nova Scotia to Brazil, and the greatest concentration is around southwest Florida. The Sheepshead fish is scientifically named Archosargus Probatocephalus, which has several rows of molars to crush prey. Surprisingly their shells also consist of molars.

It has been named due to its mouth looking like the mouth of a sheep. Reportedly this fish was caught by Nathan Martin, a regular on the pier. The man who caught it said that he was not expecting it to be a Sheepshead fish. 

The post was getting a lot of comments, one of the users commented “that fish has better teeth than me”, and “Is this where dentures come from?” wrote another.

It is a marine fish that can grow up to 76 cm but commonly reaches 30 to 50 cm.

The Sheepshead fish has a deep and compressed body shape with five or six dark bars on the side of the body over a gray background. 

Sheepshead fishes measure around 1.8 kg in weight, but some individuals reach the range of 6.8 kg.

The sheepshead fishes feed on Bivalves and Crustaceans.

Usually, Sheepshead fishes eat Oysters, Clams, and other Bivalves, Barnacles, Fiddler crabs, etc. They have hard mouths, with several rows of stubby teeth. Their front teeth closely resemble human teeth and help to crush the shells of prey. 

Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn, New York City is named after the Sheepshead Fish.

Usually, they are found at rocky bottoms or places with obstructions, jetties, and the pilings of bridges and piers.
