Malaysian social media was abuzz after the footage came out of a strange creature being spotted crawling through the ruined forests of palm oil plantations. It was believed that they spotted some alien creature.
However, experts were still in doubt and were looking for an authentic testament. It was a hairless creature that resembled an alien but no one was sure about his belongings. It had huge claws and was crawling like Gollum in the Lord of the Rings. Some workers of a palm oil plantation freaked out after seeing a peculiar creature there and attacked him fiercely. They managed to scare off the creature and hence that creature disappeared into the dense jungle.
After a few months the beast returned to the plantation and this time, they captured it and sent it to a local shelter. Some named the mysterious creature ‘Malaysian Chupacabra”. Anthony Sebastion of the Malaysia Nature Society Kuching said that this animal was not an alien creature and it was a familiar threatened species.
It is a sun bear that is devoid of fur and this is what confused the people.
The state wildlife authorities from Sarawak Forestry Corporation confirmed to the Borneo Post that the animal is a sun bear and added that it may have been driven to the plantation due to heavy flooding in that particular area.
Conservationists also claimed that he might have been abused, attacked or shaved that is why he didn’t have fur on his body.
Now the sun bear is being treated well at the wildlife center and regaining health gradually. Over time, the staff is hopeful that it will be able to be released back to nature.
The sun bear is a species that is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.
Sun bears occur in the tropical forest of Southeast Asia and are the smallest bear. They have large paws, strongly curved claws, rounded little ears and short snouts. They have jet-black fur which can vary from gray to red as per the region.
According to the reports the sun bear has decreased by 30% over the past three decades due to the clearance of its ideal habitat. They are also highly killed by the local population as their body parts are used in some traditional medical practices.
