Dr. Catherine Apuli, a vet working with The Unusual Pet Vets, believes that it takes only a few hours and little effort to completely change the life of an animal and she has proved this by giving a parrot new wing after someone severely trims them.

Dr. Apuli has been working for the welfare of animals for many years in Brisbane, Australia. When she met Wei Wei, the parrot who was a victim of wing trimming, she decided to give him wings again. However, along with the efforts of Dr. Apuli, it also took some process of repairing and making with creativity which involved some donated feathers, glue, and toothpicks. When Wei Wei’s owner bought him, she wanted to make sure that the parrot was healthy. Therefore, she brought the parrot for a general health checkup, and during his physical examination vets came to know that his wings were cut too short and he couldn’t fly. However, it was common for birds in captivity to trim their wings in order to prevent them from flying. But Wei Wei was severely hurt, Dr. Apuli told this when she went into more detail about Wei Wei’s situation.

Wei Wei hurt himself by falling heavily to the ground because his wings were trimmed.

As the owner had just bought the parrot, she was not sure that it could affect the parrot so much. One week later, she came back for microchipping, and also stated that Wei Wei had hurt himself by falling heavily to the ground. Dr. Apuli knew the solution, and she asked her to leave Wei Wei there for a few days.

Wei Wei didn’t feel a thing, so don’t worry about the little parrot.

Dr. Apuli gave the parrot a pair of prosthetic wings made out of donated feathers. This process of repairing damaged feathers by attaching new ones is known as “imping”.

She made the parrot sleep and attached the prosthetics with the help of glue to Wei Wei’s body. She also used toothpicks for support. Within a few hours, Wei Wei was back on its feet and was maneuvering around in the air like a pro.

She explained that Wei Wei had been a victim of severe wing trimming which is controversial, but some birders do to keep their pets grounded. They cut the flight feathers of the birds to prevent their escape but sometimes it hurts them and causes bleeding also.

Previously, whenever Wei Wei tried to fly, it would fall to the ground but now he could fly swiftly. It was unclear who trimmed the parrot’s wings, maybe the previous owner, or breeder. We are thankful to Dr. Apuli and The Unusual Pet Vets who helped Wei Wei and many animals before to give a second chance at life.
