Barbets are known for the bristles (stiff hairs on the skin) at the bases of their stouts and sharp bills. Here we’re going to introduce you to a species of Barbet, that has striking colorful bristles around its heavy bill. The Usambiro Barbet is scientifically named Trachyphonus Usambiro. It is a species of bird that belongs to the African barbet family Lybiidae

Formerly they were considered a subspecies of D’Arnaud’s Barbet. In 2021 IOC has split it as a distinct species. The Usambiro Barbets have a kind of incompatible colorful bristles, that make them stand out among several birds.

Looking at the pictures of the bird, you’ll observe that it is fluffy with faint yellow, cream-brown, and dark brown with some dark and white spots over its body. They have darker beaks and longer wings.

The Usambiro Barbets are found in Southern Kenya and Northern Tanzania, specifically in Maasai Mara National Reserve and Serengeti National Park.

The Usambiro Barbets have colorful bristles surrounding their dark bills. They are pale yellow or yellow near the head and beak, and also have dark spots on them. The dark spots turn into white on the brown plumage. 

They have cream or white bellies and short brown tails with white spots on them. Slight reddish hints can be seen on the vent area.

The Usambiro Barbets nest in tree cavities in which females lay two to four eggs and incubate them for 13 to 15 days.
