The Sick Calf Has Recovered Due To A Therapy Dog

Ellie Laks and Jay Weiner are the creators of Gentle Barn. They rescued an abandoned calf in 2020 and adopted it from a butcher. The calf’s mother had died, and he had just been alive for a week. They named it John Lewis Thunderheart because of his caliber of fighting against death.

They brought Lewis to their Gentle Barn. He was very sick and had severe pneumonia when he arrived. He coughed so much and exhaled sharply and loudly. Ellie said he had a high fever too. Lewis’s traumatic birth experience led him to deprive enough colostrum to develop a strong immune system. Eventually, he got pneumonia and fought for his life.

They thought it wouldn’t be safe for Lewis to survive in the barn, so they carried him inside their air-conditioned home and took proper care of him. The other reason to keep it with them was that they would be able to take care of him round the clock, and Lewis will gain a lot from the other individuals present in the house. Sky is the name of that individual and it is none other than a therapy dog.

Sky was abandoned by his previous owner because she couldn’t keep up with his level of energy, and the Gentle Barn adopted him. He was a great therapy dog and has the great ability to bring a smile to people’s faces. He could reassure those who are terrified and soften the hearts of those who are furious.

Sky became the ideal friend of Lewis, during his recovery. He soothed and comforted him. “We just keep giving him love and care till he starts to heal slowly”, Ellie said.

Lewis and Sky had developed a very special bond until he recovered and was able to walk outside. Usually, Sky curls up next to Lewis, and they also scuffle and run about the yard. However, they are from different species and have a wide variation of personalities, but they manage to get along and understand each other.

After some time, Ellie started taking Lewis out for walks about the property and meeting other cows, but Sky was always there to help Lewis.

When Lewis was just a week old, he weighed only 50 pounds, and now he is two years old and more than a thousand pounds. He has grown greatly in size in comparison to Sky. Despite their weight differences they do forget to show affection for one another. They are no more as physical as they were, with one another, but their love is undeniably growing with every passing day.

If Lewis lies down, Sky shows his love by licking or lying down next to him. Ellie said, “When I watch Lewis and Sky together, there are a lot of things for which to be grateful. What I enjoy about them is that no matter how old or large they become, their love never dies.”

We can’t deny that this cow and dog make a perfect duo.
