Family is a crucial aspect of everyone’s life whether it comes to animals or humans and they love their family unconditionally. Hence, when doctors warned that the dog had only a few days left of her life, the pilot took her 400 miles to her new family so that her final days would be filled with love.

Ashlyn was a terminal shelter dog in North Carolina. She was aging and lost a lot of weight. She was in poor health and suffering from sarcomas, which were cancerous tumors beneath her skin. However, it was not too late for her to gain good health again.

They informed the New England Humane Society (NEHS) to find a suitable home for Ashlyn. Over a week, the NEHS found a new home for her to spend her final days, all she needed was a way to get there. Paul Steklenki, the founder of Flying Fur Animal Rescue (FFAR), decided to transport her in his plane.

Paul was filled with grief as he drove the plane with Ashlyn in the seat next to him, contemplating how this could be her final flight anywhere. Even though Paul is used to carrying needy puppies to rescuers so they can have loving homes. He regularly flies up to 30 dogs per month. Paul told The Dodo for elderly canines, “Those are the ones where you pay attention to what they are going through.” Ashlyn was worried about the two-hour journey but Paul tried to make her calm. At first, she seemed a little worried, and then she would open up and get closer to him, as he told her.

Paul helped her to feel better by offering her dog biscuits. He also explained that Aslyn gave one paw and then the other and then she placed her head on his lap. Furthermore, Paul said, “It means a great deal to me.” It does matter a lot that she befriended me and it in itself was the prize.

Paul began to fly as a hobby and at about the same time he adopted a puppy. These things may sound unrelated at the time, but they have inextricably linked soon after. Paul told The Dodo that they went to pet stores, then to shelters and they started noticing a big difference. When he saw many homeless animals there in the shelters, he decided to put his new pastime to good use. This is how his journey started.

Tracy Lander, who has three dogs of her own and has been fostering dogs for the NEHS for years, said that when she picked her up from the airport, her condition was terrible. She had lost almost 39 pounds. When she went to her, she was wearing a sweater, and when she took off her sweater, her rib was visible. Lander started feeding her three times a day to help her gain weight. She also gave her vitamin and mineral supplements to help her deal with many health problems which varied from skin disorders to malignancies.

Ashlyn began to adjust to her new home as she started befriending dogs and cuddling with them. The ladder also stated that she is an excellent eater and she adores her when she offers her food.

Ashlyn came there to live with Lander in January, having no idea how long she would stay. Now it’s been a few months, and they do not think of her as an outsider. She has become more than a family member and realizes that she is loved. Lander added that Ashlyn reminds them to value every day and live in the now. Paul, the pilot, said that he never imagined discovering something so lovely and satisfying that it would replace everything else in his life.
