Green Jays are medium-sized birds with a length of 25 to 30 cm. They have vibrant feathers colored yellowish-white with blue tips on the top of their head, cheeks, and nape. The upper part of the bird is bright green while rich yellow beneath. They have black bills which appear blue from the upper side because of the rich blue bristles of the nasals. These bristles vary according to their subspecies, forming a tuft in some subspecies. Their bluish-green tails over green-yellow bodies enrich their beauty. 

Habitat

Green Jaybird is native to Central America. They are common across much of the US and Canada and have around 10 different subspecies spread across the continent. However, they mainly range from Texas to Honduras.

They feed on a wide range of insects, invertebrates, and some cereal grains also. They also take ebony seeds, and acorns which are easily available in their habitat. Surprisingly, they have been noticed using sticks sometimes to extract insects from tree bark.

Green Jays build their nest in a tree, thorny bush, or thicket where the females lay three to five eggs. Only Green Jay females incubate eggs but both participate in taking care of their young ones.

Green Jay has different subspecies residing in the US and all birds are striking in a unique way. You’ll have to head your way to the Southern tip of Texas to see this unique flier or to Mexico where another population of Green Jay resides. 

You can also arrange a bird feeder in your backyard or balcony because they are familiar with human settlements and mostly feed on seeds.
