Legendary Thai Bull Elephant, Thong Bai, Freed From His Chains At Long Last

A legendary Thai bull elephant has been freed after 40 years of remarkable service. Lek Chailert, founder of the Elephant Sanctuary, Thailand, shared this touching story of a majestic Thai bull elephant, Thong Bai, who is famous throughout the country. Thong Bai has been considered a symbol of Thailand for his unparalleled popularity as he had worked in many popular advertisements for Thai Beer, and movies and also participated in national celebrations.

An elephant advocate writes that after 40 years of service, Thong Bai deserves his freedom. Lek invited Khun NuNa Sipa-archa to visit Thong Bai and other elephants in the sanctuary. After visiting Thong Bai, she decided to help him and started seeking some way to bring him freedom and greater respect.

After a discussion of several weeks between Thong Bai’s owners and the elephant advocates, they came to an agreement and decided that Thong Bai would get a special enclosure where he could live chain-free. He would be provided with a new home that would be a part of the Surin Project, working to improve the lives of professional elephants and the economic situation of their mahouts.

The whole community worked together and raised funds to build a new home for Thong Bai. A Thai Beverage company also provided some help in the construction of Thong Bai’s shelter and the Surin government provisioned the land. Soon, they started constructing the shelter of Thong Bai and it was ready in a comfortable and strong home for the majestic elephant. It also has a fountain, plenty of soft mud, a large shade, and enough space for him to roam.

The locals decided to celebrate the moment of bringing Thong Bai to his new home. They removed the shackles of Thong Bai at his old shelter and transported him to the new home. When he arrived at his new home, he was very confused and not sure what to make of it. Lek mentioned that it was the day that Thong had been waiting for so long without any surety that he would be able to free himself from chains before his death. She was glad to welcome Thong Bai to his new home and also joined the celebration.

Thong Bai appeared confused and nervous about his new freedom and even shy at first to explore his new home. Lek got emotional and said he behaved the same as every elephant when finally released from captivity after several years in chains. It will take some time to get used to his new surroundings without being told what to do.

After a few hours, Thong Bai started enjoying and exploring his new home. The group of people who fought for his freedom were happy to see him relieved and decided to keep an eye on him to ensure he does not get chained again.

I wish Thong Bai would not be the last who was freed from his chains and started a new life full of joy and freedom.
