It can happen if you’re roaming in the rainforest areas across Brazil to Mexico. Let me introduce you to the Harpy Eagle. It is as large as a human wearing a bird costume.

Usually, we find the birds cute and sweet, but some birds are exceptionally large and terrifying. Harpy Eagle is one of them. You’re lucky enough to not have a sight of this bird. Overall, it is a prey bird and the biggest eagle in the world.

Harpy Eagles are also defined as American Harpy Eagles to differentiate them from the Papuan Eagle or Papuan Harpy Eagle.

It is scientifically named the Harpia Harpyja.

The upper side feathers of the eagle are slate-black, and the underside feathers are mostly white. A broad black band appears across the upper breast which separates the white belly from the gray head.

Females weigh almost 6-9 kg and males weigh around 4-6 kg. Males are typically smaller than females. You’d be surprised to know that the weight of the eagles depends on the availability of food in their surroundings.

Harpy Eagle has vanished from many former regions including Central America due to the destruction in its habitat.

It is known as ‘Royal Hawk’ in Brazil.

They briefly perch tree to tree for prey.

They are typically found below an elevation of 900 meters but also have been seen at elevations up to 2000 meters.

The nests of the Harpy Eagles are located very high in the tree fork, almost at a height of 16-43 meters. 

It may surprise you that a couple of Harpy Eagles usually raise only one chick every two to three years. This gigantic creature lives in the same world and we are unaware of it.
