Katherine Connor, founder and CEO of Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary (BLES) told the Dodo, that she rescued a stray dog when the other large dogs were trying to prey on it. She brought it to the Sanctuary and named it “Pancake”, since then, Pancake has been with her. However, the sanctuary focuses on taking care of elderly elephants after they can no longer work. Boon Thong was also an elder elephant facing her final days of life. Fortunately, she had individuals to take care of her as she had been for her friend during her final days. Boon Thong was in her late 60s and lived the last five years at the sanctuary, after being rescued from a riding camp, where she had been tortured to give rides to tourists uncountable times a day. She had been doing this job for more than 30 years, and her back was almost broken from carrying the load for hours. When they brought her to the sanctuary she was completely exhausted and gave up on her life.

Soon, she came to know the true sense of life at the sanctuary

She was cared for by the workers at the sanctuary and was free to learn her likes and dislikes. She also started roaming and foraging in the forest and doing all the things that she was not allowed to do before.

Furthermore, Conner said that Boon discovered a new life here and was exploring life in full.

Boon also had her favorite spots for walking, and several times she used to play at the same spot in the stream and throw mud all over herself.

Even after numerous difficulties, Boon had never given up on her life except for this week, and it was only because she had to let her life go. In her last moment when she was asking for a final goodbye, Connor and Pancake sat with Boon Thong for nine hours.
