Dogs are very caring and affectionate animals. They have high protective instincts and will often be around the ones who need help. The same goes for a rescue dog named Zip, who became the 9-day-old orphaned pony’s best friend and guardian.

Karla Swindle, the owner of S&K Quarter Horses in Fayette, Alabama, lost her 22-year-old mare, Sandy, due to declining health. The passing of her mare Sandy brings sadness to her foal, Tye, who was just nine days old. But Zip, the dog, became an unexpected friend quickly to comfort the orphaned pony.

Karla Swindle told The Dodo, “Zip spent the night next to the pony lying in the alley, and the dog looked after the horse like a father.”

Karla said that it felt like Zip sensed Tye’s heartbreak so he stayed with the pony all night, comforting him with a sympathetic paw.

Karla told the Lewiston Tribune about her dog, “Zip was lying there on the horse’s neck and was groaning, like crying. It just broke my heart.” Tye lost his mother while he gained a best friend in Zip, who quickly learned to play the role of a guardian and a good friend.

Later she said, “I think he adopted the horse as his son. He is letting the horse know that he is not alone.” Zip is always going to be on his side.

Dogs have special senses and are emotionally able to console anyone needy. As so Zip understood the situation and sensed that someone had passed away, and went to help the pony.

“We raise the pony every year, and he would look in the door and just look at them. You can tell Zip that something went wrong that night.”

She also stated that it was the first time when Zip licked, nudged, and laid on someone. Zip didn’t stop caring for his friend for several weeks and was eager to see the pony every morning.

According to Karla, “Every time I took off to the barn, Zip would run to the stall, stand in front of the stall and wait for me to get there. He beat me up every time. As soon as I opened the door, he would knock me out before I could get in there. If the pony is lying down, it will go there and lay its head on it.”

Now Tye has grown up into a happy and healthy pony, but there is no doubt that Zip played a vital role in his recovery and took care of him in the early days.

Tye spends most of his time with horse fellows and he had to leave his canine father to become more independent. “You could say that when the pony needed Zip, Zip was there for it, and now Zip knew the pony was fine, so they went their separate ways,” says Karla.
