A four-month baby albino elephant was found trapped in a nasty snare near the Kruger National Park, South Africa. When the rescuers arrived there, they assumed after looking at her condition that it had been four days since the baby elephant was tangled. We are thankful to the volunteers at Hoedspruit Endangered Species Center who reached in time and saved the albino elephant.

The baby had several wounds on its face, neck, and ears due to the snare. Her open wounds also led her to maggot infestation, but according to the vets, she will recover soon.

The rescuers named the baby elephant Khanyisa which means light or sunshine. They said that Khanyisa got caught in a terrible snare, but she didn’t lose hope and fought for life. She looked so fragile and innocent and yet so brave. Khanyisa is a unique baby elephant because her skin pigmentation is not gray just like any other elephant, but pink.

Sue Howells, an employee at the elephant orphanage, said that Khanyisa had been wounded severely, but she fought back and knew at the bottom of her heart that she would get help soon. Now she is safe and in a protective environment. He also said that everyone would make sure that Khanyisa would never have to endure something like that she had faced before.

Life in the wild is very challenging, especially for the babies. It might be more difficult for albino babies as they are abandoned usually and can be easily noticed in the herd which led them to be caught by predators.
