Rescuing A Mother’s Love: Abandoned Dog Tethered to Roadside Fence Cares for Puppies Alone

Heartening images of a nursing dog left chained to a fence in Country Roscommon, Ireland, have touched the hearts of dog lovers worldwide. The pictures depict a 2-year-old Lurcher abandoned dog tightly restrained by a collar, in a remote field. This abandoned dog was desperately trying to nurse her six young puppies. This family’s plight shed light on the importance of pet ownership and the kindness of strangers.

The distressing scene unfolded as the nursing mom and her vulnerable pups were found abandoned beside a small town called Elphin on November 6, 2019. A passerby’s immediate call for help set in motion a rescue operation. The dog and her puppies were taken to a vet clinic associated with the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA). Amidst the outrage and sadness, the good news emerged that they had not suffered major health issues despite enduring hunger and the bitter cold.

The ISPCA’s Hugh O’Toole commented on the situation, stating that the dog and her puppies were left to fend for themselves in perilous conditions. The absence of shelter, water, and food put their lives in jeopardy. O’Toole acknowledged that the situation could have been much worse if they hadn’t been alerted to help.

The dog, later named Emmy Lou, and her puppies, Billy Ray, Dixie, Dolly, Dotty, June, and Patsy, were transported to the ISPCA’s national animal shelter in County Longford. They all underwent medical assessments to ensure they were good in health.

As online comments poured in, it was evident that many were deeply affected by the sad plight of Emmy Lou and her puppies. Calls for stricter animal welfare laws and penalties for neglect resonated among concerned individuals, highlighting the urgency of addressing such issues on a big level.

Emmy Lou, the mama dog, was not microchipped and could not be tracked to figure out the owner despite the fact that microchipping is a legal requirement in the UK. Emmy’s puppies Billy Ray, Dixie, Dotty, Dolly, June, and Patsy will remain with the ISPCA until they are old enough to find a forever home for them.
